Middle Ear Implants
MiddleEarImplantHero
While relatively unknown, middle ear implants have existed for decades with a long history of being both safe and effective for the right patients - those with:

  • Certain types of hearing loss
  • Unsuccessful or disappointing experience with hearing aids
  • Reasonable expectations

If your hearing healthcare provider has not mentioned middle ear implants, we can help bridge that knowledge gap and work with your local hearing healthcare provider.

There are several types of middle ear implants, yet all middle ear implants are NOT the same kind or type of device. Some are indicated for sensorineural hearing loss; others are for mixed or conductive hearing loss. Some are active; others are passive. Some are fully implanted; others are partially implanted. Some have MRI conditional approval; others are contraindicated for any meaningful level of MRI testing. Some are osseointegrated and replace part of your hearing anatomy; others are less involved - akin to hearing aids.

Here are the initial steps we recommend:

1
Take our hearing loss
questionnaire
2
Have your hearing tested
3
Schedule an appointment with an audiologist in your area

Esteem® Hearing Implant

The fully implanted Esteem® osseointegrated active middle ear implant (AMEI) is the only FDA-approved, completely internal hearing device for adults diagnosed with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss. The Esteem hearing implant is invisible. There are no microphones to distort conversations or amplify wind. Unlike hearing aids, you never put it on or take it off. You can't lose it. You don't clean it. In fact, you rarely think about it - the Esteem hearing implant offers true 24/7 hearing.

How the Esteem Hearing Implant Works
  • The Esteem osseointegrated AMEI uses a novel sensor and the natural anatomy of the ear to capture sound and convert it into electrical signals that are leveraged by the implant.
  • The fully implanted Esteem requires a significant procedure - similar to cochlear implants - to remove and replace part of the hearing anatomy to address your hearing loss in a completely different way from hearing aids and other active middle ear implants.
  • As with other prosthetics, components of the Esteem system osseointegrate - bone grows into and around the components so that they are intertwined with the surrounding bone - to keep the device firmly implanted and ensure a consistent and constant ability to hear.

A Personal Programmer is given to you after the device is activated, allowing you to make adjustments or turn the device on/off.

“After my [Esteem] implant, I decided to run for Mrs. Nebraska, and that’s something that I never would’ve done before I got the implant. I had the confidence to stand up on stage and speak to numerous people about my implant and how it affected my life.”

“I don't know it's there. It's just doing it's job, automatically. Just like my ear does, automatically. I would be devastated if my Esteem was taken away. That would mean the end of a lot of things I'm able to hear and enjoy.”

“I think I’m more comfortable and I have my confidence back,” Elizabeth said. “Having loss and then having hearing aids and then having the Esteem, I would do it all again tomorrow because there’s no comparison for me.”

“The Esteem, frankly, gives me far greater clarity. And what’s really important to me is that it’s in my ear turned on 24/7 and I can go and jump off a sailboat if I need to without worrying about forgetting to take my hearing aids off . . .”

"I call the Esteem the no worry device. There’s no worry about batteries - whether you have a spare battery in your pocket or it goes dead unexpectedly. There’s nothing to drop; there’s nothing to break. To me this is one of those priceless items.”
