MaryKay remembers early memories of watching family members withdraw due to hearing loss. She says “you withdraw. You feel vulnerable, inadequate and - - stupid”. Her hearing loss caused her difficulty in how she was perceived causing her embarrassment and what she describes as “true angst” when she traveled alone for work and fretted over missing important information. After the Esteem she feels more confident and a part of things.
