We understand that the decision to get an Esteem® may be easier for some and harder for others. In an effort to ease your concerns, we have created the Esteem® Companion program to allow you to communicate directly with someone who has gone through the implant procedure and currently lives with the Esteem®. Feel free to browse this page for an Esteem® Companion whom you would like to communicate with. Click on the “Reach Out to Me” button to email the Companion you have selected. |

I was diagnosed with a sensineural hearing loss in my early thirties. At the time I was a mother of five, a part-time teacher, volunteer, and wedding & funeral singer. So this diagnosis & news was devastating to me. I went into hearing aids and made the best of it for thirty years, because there was no other solution available. I had been singing professionally with my husband in vocal jazz groups, then we started singing as a duo for many paid & charity gigs around our area. After putting up with high quality aids that still squeaked, squealed, & amplified loud noises, we were forced to quit singing altogether! Phone conversations were almost impossible & if you take them off to talk, somehow they get lost! I found myself in embarrassing situations when people asked me questions that I didn't hear correctly & I would give an inappropriate answer or just smile and look foolish.

August 2008 was the beginning of an extraordinary change in my life. The Esteem is now "turned on". Two months earlier, as a participant in the Envoy Clinical Trial, the Esteem hearing restoration device was implanted in one ear.

I’ve been an Esteem recipient for five years. In 2004, I saw a TV trailer for a totally implantable hearing system. Hands shaking, within five minutes, I sent an email and applied to the research program. Finding I’d missed Phase I, I waited – an impatient, anxious five months – for Phase II.
